Facebook, stop deleting our accounts!

If it hasn't happened to you, you've heard the stories. Facebook can suspend or disable your account at any time with or without warning and/or explanation. Although there are some legitimate reasons and spammers who should be banned, most of the time honest users are victim.

There are a number of problems here:

1. No account should be suspended or disabled without a specific reason. Facebook cannot simply say that your account has been flagged because of a violation of our Terms of Service (TOS), in which case the user must look through a list of things they may have done, and, if they can't find the reason, are helpless.

2. A warning should be sent out before the account is suspended or disabled. A warning with adequate response time must be sent out and must include the specific violation of Facebooks TOS.

3. Facebook needs real customer support. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to contact Facebook about anything? All contact forms and email addresses are hidden away and there is no number to call.

We've entrusted Facebook with a lot of our information. Our groups, our schedules, our friends, messages, pictures, videos, etc, etc, etc. They can't have the power to remove us and erase all of our stuff for no reason!

Heh. How ironic. The company that refuses to delete your account if you tell them to will delete it for no reason at all.

Just sounds like yet another in the long list of reasons (privacy, loss of control of your data, personally identifying aggregation, closed source, invasive) to avoid Facebook altogether. That will get their attention more than any email to the customer-reply-bot.

  2. I'd be down for avoiding Facebook because of that, but the problem is that not enough people care, and i need to be able to network with people and Facebook is the best place to do so right now. It's unfortunate.

"hey can't have the power to remove us and erase all of our stuff for no reason!"

Hum your uploaded stuff on Facebook is never deleted! Even if you delete something, it will be always available if you know the direct URL.

They can have that power, and they do have that power - you agreed to it when you signed up to Facebook.

This, unfortunately, is exactly what Facebook wanted. A bunch of users tied in because there's no other way to communicate with their friends, and unable to switch to other services due to the network effect.

"We trust Facebook with a lot of our information..."

Really? WHY? I don't. I've not even signed up. What's the value in moving all of your data to a system that is free and has no vested interest in keeping you as a 'customer'?

you CHOSE to sign up with a service like this! if you want to be a part of a network with user accountability, go find one! (I doubt you will, so I suppose you'll have to MAKE one)
