GMail Voice and Video Chat coming soon to Linux users

Looks like GMail Voice and Video Chat will soon be available to all of us Linux users out there! From the end of this update on version 1.0.10 of the software:
Lastly, thanks to everyone who has written in asking about support for Linux. We've had to rewrite a key piece of technology, so this has taken some time. However, the results will be worth the wait.
Of course, you could just use a real IM client like Empathy to get audio and video chatting over GTalk and Jabber now.

Just more proprietary software that Linux users will be using... I hope Gnome et al strongly encourage users to use Empathy instead of this new GMail client (plus, the GMail client won't have any of the great telepathy features, like tubes).

When using empathy, can you actually voice or video chat to people on windows/mac os using the gmail video client?

If not, empathy isn't going to really be that beneficial for the purposes of voice/video (at least to me).

I didn't think empathy had video/audio chat support yet.

Empathy can't video chat to Gtalk, can it ?! I wish it could!

Yes, Empathy CAN do voice and video chat to GMail/GTalk users. =]

It can (so far) only do audio to GMail/GTalk users. No Video yet since Google uses a proprietary codec/method for video.

Any idea if this will work for 64 bit users? We tend to get left out quite a bit...

Absolutely, i'm a 64-but user myself =]

64-bit doesn't have any downsides on Linux anymore, it seems. Flash and everything else now work quite well, if not better!

@ Danny Piccirillo ... as long as they do not use the GTalk client? Is there any solution for communication GTalk client (on Mac) to Empathy? If so, would you be so kind to give an explanation?

I do not have Linux OS but its a good thing that you guys can now have Gmail voice chat. It would be easier and fun because you are able to see the other end. By the way guys, I have a Video Games site. Hope you can visit it sometime.
